Renowned rapper GNL Zamba has passionately hailed Kawempe as the birthplace of modern Ugandan music, asserting that no other region has produced more musical greatness.

“There is greatness that comes from Kawempe in a way,” he remarked, emphasizing the area’s profound influence on Uganda’s entertainment scene.

With a playful yet confident tone, he declared, “We can do a battle of Kawempe vs Uganda, and Kawempe beats Uganda,” underscoring his belief that the region stands above the rest in shaping the country’s music industry.

To reinforce his point, GNL Zamba listed several iconic artists from Kawempe, including Jose Chameleone, Pallaso, Mudra D Viral, Fik Fameica, Spice Diana, Sheebah, and Weasel—all of whom have made a significant mark in the industry.

“We have the Republic of Kawempe. We could secede from this country if we are not treated well,” he added, highlighting the region’s strong musical identity and influence.

A Career Shaped Beyond Kawempe

Despite his deep-rooted pride in Kawempe, GNL Zamba acknowledged that his personal breakthrough in music was not directly tied to the area. Instead, he credited DV8, a well-known entertainment hub from his university days, as the launching pad for his career.

“I made my mark while at university. I come from an extremely strict family, so there was curfew. But when I got to university, there was a bit of freedom. Still, growing up in Kawempe was special. Whenever I need inspiration, I go back to my childhood in my mind,” he revealed, reflecting on how his upbringing continues to shape his artistry.
