Eddy Kenzo has distanced himself from the ongoing public debate surrounding Azawi, emphasizing that his goal was never to challenge or attack her but rather to address misconceptions regarding the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF), which he leads.

"I’m no longer interested in the debate, and I’m not here to challenge Azawi," Kenzo stated, reaffirming his respect and admiration for her.

"I love her and I’m genuinely happy for her. I just wanted to clarify what the federation has done."

Providing Clarity, Not Conflict

According to Kenzo, the proposed public discussion was not intended to be confrontational but rather to foster understanding about challenges facing Uganda’s creative industry.

"She expressed her views, and I respect that. But I felt the need to clarify some aspects of what she said and explore ways to align and improve," Kenzo explained.

UNMF’s Financial Structure and Impact

Kenzo also addressed concerns about UNMF’s funding, clarifying that while the federation does receive financial support, it does not rely on government handouts.

"Our federation doesn’t receive handouts from the government. However, we do get financial support, and it goes directly into our SACCO (Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization)," Kenzo noted.

He highlighted how the federation has positively impacted artists, particularly those in rural areas, citing examples such as Dan Mugul, an artist from Gomba, who was struggling before receiving UGX 5 million from UNMF to help transform his life.

"We’ve advocated for creatives and supported many artists who needed a boost," Kenzo emphasized.
