Argentina's head coach, Lionel Scaloni, has stated that Lionel Messi is no longer an essential presence for the team to perform well.
Messi, who has netted 112 goals in 192 appearances for the Albiceleste, has played a crucial role in securing one World Cup and two Copa America titles for his country.
However, with Messi turning 38 on June 24, Scaloni is already preparing for a future without the legendary forward.
"The team is now at a point where it can play just as effectively with or without Leo. In the past, adjustments had to be made, but now we don't have that need, and the team functions the same way—that's a positive," Scaloni explained.
Argentina has proven its strength without Messi, having defeated both Uruguay and Brazil, securing their place in the 2026 World Cup.
