King Faisal Hospital has become East Africa’s first medical facility to introduce the ZEISS KINEVO 900S, an advanced robotic surgical microscope that marks a major advancement in neurosurgical care and training.
This cutting-edge system combines robotic precision, 3D imaging, and advanced visualization technologies, revolutionizing the way complex brain and spinal surgeries are performed in Rwanda and the region.
A Leap Forward in Surgical Accuracy
Dr. David Hakizimana, a neurosurgeon at King Faisal Hospital, emphasized the system’s ability to enhance precision, efficiency, and safety in delicate procedures.
"The microscope automatically follows surgical instruments and keeps the image centered, eliminating the need for constant manual adjustments. This saves time and reduces the risk of errors," he explained.
Exclusive Technology for East Africa
Procured and delivered by Rwanda Medical Supply, the ZEISS KINEVO 900S is the only fully equipped unit of its kind in East Africa. RMS highlighted its arrival on social media, calling it “a game-changer” for surgical precision and training in Rwanda.
Transforming Neurosurgical Capabilities
In addition to boosting surgical accuracy, the robotic microscope features fluorescence imaging, enabling surgeons to distinguish tumors, blood vessels, and healthy tissue in real time.
"Tumors and normal tissue often appear similar, but with this technology, we can clearly differentiate between them. This allows for more complete tumor removal while preserving vital brain functions," Dr. Hakizimana noted.
Another key feature is the QEVO endoscope, an ultra-small, integrated camera that extends surgical visibility into tight or hidden spaces that traditional tools cannot reach.
Advancing Medical Training and Collaboration
Beyond surgery, the system supports education and mentorship, offering high-resolution 3D projections and live-streaming capabilities for remote surgical training.
"Junior doctors and medical students can now observe real surgeries in 3D, whether in the operating room or from another location," Dr. Hakizimana explained.
Additionally, the technology facilitates tele-surgical consultations, enabling senior surgeons at King Faisal to guide teams in district hospitals remotely.
"This isn’t just a tool for King Faisal—it strengthens surgical care across Rwanda and the region," he emphasized.
Reinforcing Rwanda’s Leadership in Healthcare Innovation
The introduction of the ZEISS KINEVO 900S further establishes Rwanda as a regional leader in medical technology and innovation, setting new standards in neurosurgical excellence across East Africa.
