Following a security breach involving the official account of the Tanzania Police Force (TANPOL), Tanzania has restricted access to platform X. Reports indicate that hackers took control of TANPOL’s account and used it to spread misleading information about President Samia Suluhu. Although the specifics of the misinformation remain unclear, the fallout prompted swift government intervention.

On Tuesday, May 20, NetBlocks—a global internet observatory—confirmed that X had become inaccessible across Tanzania, with live metrics showing that the platform (formerly known as Twitter) is not accessible on major internet networks. While the government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the blockage, it is evident that access restrictions are now in place across multiple service providers.

This action comes just a day after President Suluhu called on law enforcement to strengthen security measures for social media platforms, highlighting their crucial role in protecting national interests.
