The National Resistance Movement (NRM) mainstream and women’s elections in Lira District have been postponed due to reported irregularities.

By 10 a.m., delegates had gathered at Ogur Seed Secondary School, the designated election venue. The process initially proceeded smoothly with the election of various leagues, including youth, elders, veterans, and persons with disabilities (PWDs). However, tensions arose in the afternoon when delegates who had voted for the workers and entrepreneurship league refused to vacate the venue, insisting on participating in the mainstream elections.

This disruption prompted District Registrar Moses Okello to postpone the election, citing a petition alleging irregularities. He confirmed that the election would be rescheduled for a later date.

Despite the delay, Linda Agnes Auma, a candidate for District Chairperson and the current District Woman MP, accused her opponent, Sam Engola, of bribing the registrar. Okello, however, dismissed the allegation as unfounded.

Engola, who also serves as a Senior Presidential Advisor, countered by accusing Auma of electoral malpractice.

Meanwhile, in Kole District, Andrew Moses Awany, the District Chairperson and President of the Uganda Local Governments’ Association (ULGA), lost his bid for the Kole NRM Chairperson position.

During the election at the Kole District Headquarters, Lillian Konga Anyati secured 231 votes, defeating Awany, who received 96 votes out of the 343 total ballots cast. NRM electoral registrar Joseph Ogwal Oyuku officially declared Konga as the new District NRM Chairperson.

In Lira City, Dr. Jane Aceng, the City Woman MP and Minister of Health, was declared Chairperson after running unopposed.
