The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Somalia National Army (SNA), Major General Yusuf Rageh Odowaa, has praised the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) for their unwavering commitment and sacrifices in the fight against terrorism during a visit to the Ugandan Contingent headquarters under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia on 28 April 2025.

The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) will remain in Somalia for the foreseeable future to continue supporting the Somalia National Army (SNA) and the government in the fight against Al-Shabaab militants, according to Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga.

During a meeting with SNA overall commander Maj Gen Yusuf Odowaa, Brig Ssemwanga reaffirmed the UPDF’s commitment to its mission in Somalia. "We stand firmly in support of the SNA and the Federal Government of Somalia. The UPDF will carry out its responsibilities with diligence and professionalism," he stated.

Maj Gen Odowaa commended the UPDF for its unwavering dedication and sacrifices in the battle against terrorism during his visit to the Ugandan Contingent headquarters under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission (AUSSOM).

He acknowledged the significant contributions of UPDF forces in bringing stability to a country devastated by over 30 years of war and extremist activities.

"You have demonstrated exceptional courage in the fight against Al-Shabaab. Your sacrifice has greatly advanced our efforts. As SNA commander, I commit to strengthening our cooperation because joint operations are vital to fully defeating Al-Shabaab," said Maj Gen Odowaa.

His remarks come shortly after military commanders from various troop-contributing nations, during a meeting in Kampala, warned that Al-Shabaab has been reclaiming territories vacated by AUSSOM forces amid the ongoing drawdown process. Over the past year, the militant group has intensified its attacks and regained control of several areas in Lower Shabelle and Middle regions.

"We are determined to liberate and secure all regions still under terrorist control. Our objective is to bring lasting peace and ensure unrestricted movement for people and goods across Somalia," Maj Gen Odowaa asserted.

Brig Gen Ssemwanga emphasized the vital role of local communities in countering terrorism, particularly through intelligence sharing and insurgency prevention. Since its deployment in Somalia in 2007, UPDF has successfully freed multiple areas from Al-Shabaab control.

However, following the deadly attack on UPDF forces stationed at Buulo-Mareer on May 26, 2023, which resulted in the loss of 54 soldiers, Al-Shabaab has managed to reclaim several locations where peacekeeping troops had withdrawn.
