The Tanzanian government has released Ugandan human rights activist Agather Atuhaire. Atuhaire had been unaccounted for for roughly one week following her arrest alongside fellow activist Boniface Mwangi. The two, along with other lawyers and activists, were initially held at the Central Police Station in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
This Friday morning, Atuhaire reemerged and was reportedly discovered near the Uganda-Tanzania border. Her reappearance came following an official complaint filed by the Ugandan government through Colonel Fred Mwesigye, the High Commissioner to Tanzania.
In a letter addressed to the Tanzanian Police, Mwesigye requested detailed information regarding the detained Ugandan national and sought permission for Mission staff to visit her, engage in discussions about her situation, and explore the possibility of facilitating her release and return to Uganda.
